Follow us as we travel
The cost of living goes up, year by year. Wages on the other hand continue to lag behind that cost. We have chosen to downsize, and find alternative ways to mitigate the cost of living. This allows us to save what the average family would spend on their largest expense every month. Mortgages and rent. The median rent in 2019 for a 1 bedroom apartment was over $1200 a year!
Can you imagine being able to save $1200 a month? That's $14,000 a year. Or in other words a really nice used car! Melissa and I worked what would be considered blue collar jobs. We had the ability to pay a $1200 rent, but we wouldn't have much leftover after other bills and necessities of life.
Living in a camper, or even in the sleeper of a truck may not be for everyone, or every situation. But it works for us. It's a means to an end. There is always a next step for us and this isn't forever. The extreme downsizing is allowing us to put $14k a year towards ourselves. It's allowing us an opportunity to do something greater for our selves. Isn't that what we all want?
When life gets tough, get tough back. Make those moves your friends will mock. Act on those instincts you know will pay dividends months, or even years down the road. Those sacrifices today when friends and family are living it up on social media, won't mean a thing when you've reached your goal down the road. Head up, eye on the prize and never let doubt stop you.
